Introducing… Herts 2025. An initiative pulling up in Hertfordshire towns aiming to increase the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) in the taxi population. Supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Programme 2014 – 2020, the initiative will deliver significant air quality improvements in urban areas. Herts 2025 will address the market failures surrounding EVs, which include lack of information and awareness regarding the benefits, availability and capabilities of EVs.

Providing a viable solution

Our solution is providing a real world answer to the lack of understanding and awareness of EVs within the taxi community. We are offering existing licensed taxi drivers a voucher to partly fund an EV trial, for a period of at least three months. By testing an EV over an extended period of time, drivers will be able to understand the benefits it can bring to their business.

As part of this service, Electric Blue will work with the vehicle provider to ensure that each driver receives charger training, EV training and education, and support throughout the trial.

Following the trial, the vehicle supplier will provide a full debrief and report on emissions and financial savings, using the vehicle telematic data. Using this information, the driver will be provided with a personalised, suggested route forwards for future EV adoption.

Why we’re supporting electric taxis

Some of the highest mileage vehicles on the road are the UK’s 242,200 taxis, including both hackney carriage and private hire. These vehicles complete the majority of their mileage in our most densely populated areas. The taxi industry accounts for 2.9m tonnes of CO2e emissions and spends an estimated £1.3bn a year on fuel.

These numbers are why we feel it is so important to bring EV solutions to our taxi communities. By demonstrating their feasibility, taxi drivers are given the opportunity to make a positive change, and reduce their contribution to poor air quality in urban areas. We have a target of 240 drivers over the three year term, meaning a real impact can be made by the taxi community on their local air quality.

European Regional Development Fund

Herts 2025 is receiving up to £759,292 of funding from the England European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. The Department for Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is the Managing Authority for ERDF. Established by the European Union, ERDF funds help local areas to stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support innovation, businesses, create jobs and local community regenerations.
